- Degenerative Disc Disease: As your discs age, there’s normal wear and tear. Eventually, this aging may lead to the breakdown of disc walls. This can cause massive amounts of pain and herniation.
- Trauma: One of the most common back pain causes is trauma. If you’re in a car accident or fall from a high point, then you can injure your back. Sometimes this back pain leads to surgery, other times you just need a little physical therapy.
- Compression Fracture: Occasionally, your vertebrae may become too weak to support the pressure put on the spine. When this happens, you may suffer from a compression fracture. This type of pain can occur rapidly – from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds.
- Osteoarthritis: If your back starts to suffer from dull, aching as you age, then you may have osteoarthritis. This pain can occur at multiple levels of the spine and is considered progressive. If you do not take measures to improve your pain, it will get worse.
- Herniated Disc: While not as common as some injuries, it’s not a surprise when a patient walks into my office with a herniated disc. This occurs when a disc gets out of place is begins irritating nerves it has no business being in contact with. Sadly, this can cause extreme pain for many individuals.
- Deformity: Some individuals are born with a deformity, like scoliosis, and develop back pain because of the deformity. These minor issues often cause major issues like disc problems and joint pain. Stenosis can even develop from a deformity.
- Slipped Vertebrae: Occasionally, one of your vertebrae will slip past the other one and cause you pain. This can happen in a variety of ways for a plethora of reasons. The pain will often radiate down the leg or cause massive instability in the back.
- Spinal Stenosis: Another serious back pain issue is spinal stenosis. With this condition, the spinal canal starts to narrow and the nerve roots suffer. With this condition, many feel back pain throughout multiple levels of their back.
